my mom didn't believe in lying to children so when I first asked about santa claus as a small child she was like "oh santa claus is another name for a man named saint nicholas who lived a long time ago. he was a very kind and generous man and he loved giving people presents and he would do things like put presents in people's stockings when they were hung up to dry by the fire, so they would find them and be surprised. so now when we give presents at christmas it's fun to pretend saint nicholas or 'santa claus' brings them. and we hang up stockings by the fire and when we get up in the morning there are presents in them, just like if saint nicholas was still alive to bring them!"

so that thanksgiving one of my uncles said jovially "so mac, are you being good for santa claus?" and little (not quite three year old) mac looked up and raised an eyebrow and said witheringly "he's dead."

Alright folks, time to add a new quote to the list of things that go hard and sound like they’re from classic lit, but actually come from unexpected places

Democrats will put forward healthcare policies that are like "The best we can do is everybody aged 30-35 who makes exactly $30,000 dollars a year but no more or less and is in perfect health could maybe possibly be eligible to apply for a free finger of whiskey and a minie ball to bite down on" and Republicans will be like "That is literally what communism is"

Yeah quiet quitting is great and all but have you tried chaotic working?

Like. I remember back in my grocery store cashier days I did so much crazy shit.

When WIC (Women, infants, and children voucher program to help low income mothers/families with children) people were in my line I would pretty much know who they were. Before the cards they had to tell us upfront they were WIC and show us their vouchers for what they were allowed to get (it was awful some times. Like. 2 gallons of milk. $4 worth of vegetables etc etc). They’d always have items hanging back, waiting to see what the total was and if they would have to take it off the belt.

I began to place the fruits/vegetables a certain way on the register scale so that like 1/2lbs of grapes read as like .28lbs or something. Then act shocked when I said that they still had X amount of lbs left. They got all their fruit and vegetables.

I think it started to kinda? Catch on to the women? Because I would have the same moms in my line month after month. And even after they switched to the cards (they worked like food stamp cards?) I’d still do the same thing. They were able to get more produce for whatever shitty max amount Indiana gave them.

Anyways. Be chaotic. It’s more fun that way.

from iww.org: "Good Work" Strikes One of the biggest problems for service industry workers is that many forms of direct action, such as Slowdowns, end up hurting the consumer (most of them also members of the workering class) more than the boss. One way around this is to provide better or cheaper service -- at the boss' expense, of course. Workers at Mercy Hospital in France, who were afraid that patients would go untreated if they went on strike, instead refused to file the billing slips for drugs, lab tests, treatments, and therapy. As a result, the patients got better care (since time was being spent caring for them instead of doing paperwork), for free. The hospital's income was cut in half, and panic-stricken administrators gave in to all of the workers' demands after three days. In 1968, Lisbon bus and train workers gave free rides to all passengers to protest a denial of wage increases. Conductors and drivers arrived for work as usual, but the conductors did not pick up their money satchels. Needless to say, public support was solidly behind these take-no-fare strikers. In New York City, I.W.W. restaurant workers, after losing a strike, won some of their demands by heeding the advice of I.W.W. organizers to "pile up the plates, give 'em double helpings, and figure the checks on the low side."ALT

Editing to add some context: This is from the IWW's static archive site. The IWW is a radical union with a long history. All the actions above are cool and the OP's actions reminded me of them which is why I shared this! But some of responses to this post have questioned, "why don't more workers do good work strikes instead of work stoppages?"

In many countries, some methods of worker organizing and direct action are legal and protected, and other methods are illegal. Work-stoppage strikes are legal in many countries for many industries - your boss can't get you arrested just for striking, no matter how much money it costs them. They may not even be allowed to fire you. "Good work strikes" are often illegal and your boss can fire you and call the cops on you for stealing goods and services from them. You can go to jail. A radical anarchist union member may be fine with that risk, but your average union member with a family and kids, etc, is not going to be. So if a strike is making your life harder please don't blame the workers, they may wish they could do a good work strike but it may just not be possible for them because of their circumstances.

Just FYI for my followers, a lot of this is illegal in the UK. And there’s a reason.

genuinely when you log off and are only exposed to the lives of those around you as god intended you realize how much shit does not matter. i know this is not a hot take but we were not meant to hear every thought, feeling and opinion of people we will never see face to face. it’s so much easier to pile on people for harmless but annoying opinions when you will never have to spend extended time with them.

there is something so darkly comical about tumblr potentially outliving twitter

tumblr, which is held together with duct tape and madness, run by three raccoons in blood stained Yahoo! hats and a handful of crabs, its only discernible source of income the sale of shoelaces from an inside joke so inside no one knows the original source anymore and fake blue checkmarks... that website still lives on

truly the cockroach of social media and I love it for that

joe biden’s resumé, in order of importance:

    1. caused fall out boy
    2. 46th president of the united states of america

the first time i ever heard about biden “causing” fob was in a tik tok and for some reason my immediate thought was that mr joseph biden himself told these motherfuckers to start a band, pep talk and everything. and then my second thought was maybe he had some connection with a record label, and called them up like “yeah, man, got this great band, great group of kids”

it never crossed my mind that pete wentz’s parents met at a fucking biden campaign
